Dear Emerson,
You’re one month old today…I know everyone tells me how fast it goes, and to enjoy it while it lasts and such, and I believe them, but man you are getting old so fast! As I type this you are squirming around in your little swing, it’s not moving, you’re not too fond of the fast speed yet, but you’re doing the thing where you make the most adorable little sqeaks and squaks as you try to wake up…I also think I heard the rumbling of your tush, which let me tell you, it can be heard around the apartment on most days, and we don’t live in a tiny studio!
Our time in the hospital was amazing…mostly because you were so beautiful and all you wanted to do was sleep and be held. We’d pass you back and forth from Daddy to me and we’d begrudgingly pass you off to visitors who wanted to exclaim your cuteness. You are such a good girl and from the start only made a noise when you needed to eat. The nurses even proclaimed your cuteness and told us they didn’t say that to all the mommies and daddies…if you weren’t cute they said they would have commented on how much hair you had or your big feet!
Speaking of eating, you started off at just a few minutes old a professional nurser, so good in fact my milk production today is more than you can handle. The nurses were all amazed that you would latch on a actively suckle for so long and proclaimed your greatness often. We went to our first class together the day after you were born…you were nice and hungry and we talked about your tied-tounge…I can’t wait to see if it impedes your speech…they told me breastfeeding you would always hurt, but we stuck through the first week of pain and made it out on the other side intact (meaning I didn’t let any big doctor person go anywhere near you with scissors…although don’t get me wrong, if you continued to hurt me as much as you did I was certainly considering it!)
Our month has been a busy one, you’ve had a million visitors, and we even made your first trip up to meet your Great Grandma Doris at two weeks, a trip to Hampton beach at three weeks old, and you made it all the way to your cousin Mark’s baby shower when you were four weeks…we refused to go anywhere in the first week so that we could be home with you and study your every move…and then Daddy had to go back to work and the girl’s stayed home to figure out the routine.
Most of the time you are asleep…when you wake up you want to be fed, but to your dismay we change you first so we don’t have to disturb a sleeping chicken! You always have something to say about lying down to get your diaper changed, and boy do those little legs squirm! Daddy says he knew you would wiggle, but not THIS much! In the first few weeks you demanded to be fed sometimes every hour, but most times every two hours, now you can go 4 hours, even five at night sometimes. It seems as though I get you in the co-sleeper for the first stretch, and then you never make it back because I hold you and feed you and fall asleep with you nursing or in my arms trying to get a burp…by the time I wake up you’re squirming to be fed again…I wonder when I’ll get this routine down, but enjoy you being so little and needing me so much.
You’re a morning person, that is for sure! By the time we make it to the 5 am feeding you are bright eyed and ready to start your day…I’d rather sleep until 10 or so, but we’re on your terms for now…and I’m starting not to mind! You nap from 9-12 and again from 2-6 and then from 8-2am and then from there I’m too sleepy to know, but I think we’re usually up at 5 after that…
Your poor little tummy still can’t handle too much food, and you let me know by emptying it and then we start all over again. Just this morning daddy was trying to help you with a little gas and had your legs doing the bicycle, but much to his dismay he helped you to empty from the top, not the bottom! I’ve taken to calling you little Mt. Vesuvius and we do anything to keep the little volcano from erupting!
You hate it when I sneeze or sniffle, you give me the most disgusted looks.
You love to pick your head up and show off how strong you are!
You’re getting strong enough to kick that silly swaddle blanket off your legs at night.
You scooch your way close to me in the night when you’re in your co-sleeper, so much so that I worry you’ll mush your face into the side of it.
You scratch and claw and hit me when you’re mad or sad or upset…I know you don’t mean it so you’re forgiven.
You make the most adorable sounds when I hold you and you nurse.
You make the most adorable faces in your sleep and I think from the smiles I have seen that you are going to have an adorable dimple like your Daddy, but just one, not two like him—yours is on the right.
We know you’re really out for the count when you raise your arms way above your head…just like you were at my 11 week ultrasound, and just like your daddy likes to sleep…you looks so comfortable and so happy and so loved and that makes me feel great!
You love to have your head shampooed, but hate the bath! We did find out, though, that if we pop a soothie in your mouth while washing the rest of you, you don't scream, you just stare at us with disdain.
Daddy is feeding you the first bottle tomorrow...There is a part of me, Emmie, that wants you to stay my little M&M forever, and there is another part that can’t wait for your giggles and squeals, that can’t wait to see you mush spaghetti all over your head, that can’t wait to see you take your first steps and listen to your first words, can’t wait to see you walk into school on the very first day, and walk out years later a woman graduating and ready for the world…I’m not looking forward to you getting a car, or dating boys…but I’ll tolerate it. I’m not looking forward to your bumps and bruises, but I’ll kiss them away…I’m am so excited and ready to share this life with you! I thank God for you every minute of everyday! So my little chicken, I’m sure there are parts that I missed, but I am trying my best to store every little moment and every new development in my mind and my heart! You rock, chicken!
Love you forever,
Mommy
P.S. I can’t wait to give you a sibling to play with!! (And for me to love!)
Stay tuned for the ONE MONTH pictures! I think we're taking them tonight!
